Nice character study of a female pool player whose life is going in smaller and smaller circles and simply wants out, but knows no way to get out.
Excellent performances from Famke Janssen who brings a real underplayed performance, and particularly Rip Torn, who I normally tolerate - as it always seems to be a variation of the MIB character - here he plays the pool hall owner and gives a very good performance indeed - nicely underplayed.
The plot of pool player trying to find meaning in her life with her estranged son is good - but the film is at its best when it's playing pool - just wish there had been more and more of that - very nice.
The hustling is never glamorized and feels authentic and kind of grubby. All in all a nice small indie movie that delivers a satisfying character study of the type normally given to guys - and for that alone it is notable.
For first time director Chris Eigeman whose previous acting credits are more in the romantic comedy line or TV shows - this ain't bad at all No need to waste time endlessly browsing—here's the entire lineup of new movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix this month.

Turn The River. Kailey eventually collects enough money and prepares to flee with her son in tow. On the morning of departure, she drops by David's house to speak to him for the first time in eleven years.
She tells him that she is leaving with Gulley and that he will be better off with her. Kailey then handcuffs David inside the house with the aid of a replica handgun.
David's wife returns to find him, and they call the police. After driving to the Canada—US border, Kailey and Gulley have only to catch an early morning bus over the border.
A card is burned and the most infamous of community cards, the river sometimes called fifth street is dealt. All remaining players have seven cards for selecting their best five-card Poker hand their two hole cards combined with the five community cards.
A round of betting takes place, and the best five-card hand at the table is the winner. Apr 26, Famke Janssen shines in this film!!!
One of her best performances. The film reminded me of the film Trucker. Nice ensemble. I definitely recommend this film, especially cause of Famke's performance.
Sol C Super Reviewer. May 13, Turn The River is a stupid story, that is poorly directed, and just plain boring. Kailey is a professional gambler who not only lost custody of her son when she got divorced, but also lost the right to even see him.
She is convinced that he ex-husband is abusing her twelve year old son, the way he abused her, and she's determined to do the only thing she can about.
Kailey goes on a quest to win as much money as she can, so she can get her son and take him away to a better place.
First of all, we have no idea why Kailey can't see her son and we so no evidence of abuse by her ex-husband. Gambling, also infers random games of chance, but not with Kailey, honestly it's just ridiculous.
The film stars X-men beauty Famke Janssen, who is quite good looking, but unfortunately very dry as an actress.
A lot of things are alleged and assumed in this movie, but we aren't shown any of it. It's impossible to separate fact from bull shit, in this incredibly slow dud of a movie.
The script is terrible, the acting is bland, and the direction is sloppy. If you suffer from chronic insomnia, try watching this!
Todd S Super Reviewer. Aug 07, In "Turn the River," Kailey Sullivan Famke Janssen, doing a fine Sandra Bullock impression is a pool player who has been forbidden from seeing her year old son Gulley Jaymie Dornan since he was born.
However, that does not stop her from contacting him via a dead letter drop at a pool hall or meeting him in Central Park when she is in New York City.
Lately, she has noticed Gulley's broken arm, ascribing this to his father Matt Ross and hatches a plot to run away with her son.
The poorly directed "Turn the River" wastes a good cast in a failed attempt to capture the atmosphere of smoke-filled pool halls by going for a melodramatic premise that ends on a false note.
I know that Gulley's father is quite possibly abusive but Kailey is not the solution, even though the movie tries in vain to make her sympathetic.
Since when do criminal lowlifes do anything without getting paid beforehand? His heroine adopts the iconography of the hustler movie, but feminizes it.
This is dramatically different than the famous male billiards hustlers, for whom pool-playing is their sole identity. We had to show just enough to keep the movie moving.
